In 2006, SHN conducted a wetland delineation, special status plant and wildlife species habitat assessment and focused surveys, vegetation inventory, and mapped all environmentally sensitive habitat areas within the Phase I Elk River Trail Improvement project area. The Phase I project area includes developing a new trail segment from Truesdale Avenue in Eureka to the existing Elk River Wildlife Trail, located adjacent to the Elk River Estuary.
In 2007, SHN conducted focused botanical surveys, wetland delineation, and mapped all environmentally sensitive habitat areas within the Phase II project area. The Phase II project area includes the expanding and improving the existing Elk River Wildlife Trail. Results of the fieldwork included recommendations for avoiding or minimizing impacts to biological resources, such as wetland and special status plant species. SHN’s work will be used by the City of Eureka in their CEQA analysis, to apply for state and federal permits, and to assist in the planning anddesign phase of the trail improvement project. SHN will continue to provide consulting services as needed by the City to assist with the new trail segment and expansion of the existing trail.
