Mike Foget, SHN’s CEO, was recently featured in the 2026 Environmental Business Journal (EBJ) Executive Interview Series, where he discussed the future of the engineering industry, the expansion of AI, and the importance of field-based expertise.
In the interview, Mike expressed optimism about current market conditions and SHN’s future. While economic conditions are currently dynamic, SHN remains focused on serving our communities in Northern California and Southern Oregon. Grant funding for municipal infrastructure and support for renewable energy have been decreasing, but SHN remains prepared to assist our communities.
Looking ahead, Mike remains optimistic about opportunities tied to horizontal infrastructure, including broadband internet installation and transportation.
Regarding the use of AI across our industry. Mike emphasized that SHN’s AI strategy centers on using it as a tool to assist but never replace technical staff. AI is unable to personally care for clients or to make decisions in uncertain situations, which engineers often must do. “AI has required us to explicitly recognize that our client relationships are key…and these cannot be delegated to AI” (Environmental Business Journal, Volume 39, Numbers 7/8, Q3 2026). AI use cases will certainly grow, and SHN plans to embrace it in ways that do not compromise our company’s vision or values.
The EBJ feature also offered a personal reflection on Mike’s career journey. Throughout the interview, he emphasized the importance of continuous improvement and building a strong team culture.
As SHN continues to grow and adapt to a dynamic industry, we remain committed to our core mission: to deliver solutions that improve our communities.
